Kite Festival

I have to admit, I live in a pretty cool town.  This week is Spring Break and my cutie-patootie sister-in-law is visiting us for a portion of it.  We like to keep her on her toes and having a good time so we took her to Zilker Park for the Austin Kite Festival on Sunday.  We've never been and we made a few mistakes along the way.

First, we jumped the gun on parking and took what we thought was best along the feter road of the highway.  Don't worry (espcially Gigi if you are reading) it was blocked off by the police so it was super safe!  But as we walked what seemed like miles we passed the very well planned event parking area with ample spots available for patient Kite Festival goers (i.e. not us).

Second, we forgot our chairs AND blankets and had to sit on the ground.  That wasn't that big of a deal but my foot fell asleep b/c Preston decided that I was going to be his 'mommy chair'.  Ok the real reason was b/c my pants were too tight, ok?!  Gah.

Speaking of clothing, brings me to our third mistake, we all dressed too warmly.  It was 68 degrees in the house as we were all getting dressed and cold in the garage as we were loading our unknowingly overly dressed selves in the car.  So, we were all miserable b/c it was so hot!  Perfect if in shorts, but none of us were.  I don't wear shorts anyway, but that's a discussion for another time.

Regardless of our mistakes, we had a great time.  We had three kites... Spiderman, Diego, and a cool peacock one my grandmother gave Miles a few months back.  The peacock one caught everyone's attention as it was super cool.  Thanks to Sam's Wholesale, we were the best kite havers there!  Who knew?  Did the peacock fly?  No. Not really.

The best kite was the Diego one and it got up pretty high.  But this was a Kite Festival so there was more than one opportunity at tangling up your kite or tripping over someone else while looking up at your own kite.  We virtually put our lives in our hands at this place, people!!

Here they all are getting the kites in the air... overly dressed and sweating like maniacs.  Fun times.

Victoria showing off her kite flying skills.  She only crashed into two other kites and got completely intermangled with them.  We were proud of our Victoria.  First timer and all.  She even handled the detangling whilst maintaining her kite in full flight.  Talent. Sheer Talent, I tell ya.

I bet she'll never look at Diego the same again.

Preston ducking for cover... remember I mentioned crashing and intermangling.  Smart kid.

Victor wouldn't leave without giving the peacock it's due air time.  So he gave it that ol' college try and she soared!
Way to go, Victor!

And what did I do, you ask?
Parked my hiney, that's what!  A blanket or one of our 8 lawn chairs we moved out of the way to get to the Diego kite sure would have been nice.... we. were. so. hot!!!  Look at Miles' face!  He was wearing lined windpants and a long sleeve shirt.  Both boys were.  Hopefully they'll forgive me soon.  By the way, Victor says I'll regret getting these sunglasses so big.  I don't know what he's talking about!  I think I look cool in my shades.  Don't you agree?

This is what it looked like from 1st Street (in the nice AC of our car - with my seat coolers blowing full speed), see all the kites?  There were so many!  It was a lot of fun and neat to see so many different kites.

Then we decided to find UT and drive around a bit.  Victoria is our future pediatrician and she might possibly choose to go to UT.  It'd be fun to have her closer.  We enjoyed riding around downtown and seeing everything.  Victor took this shot of the UT Tower.

Austin is a great place to live!  Guess that's why I've been here all my life. :)
